Cash and Market Risk Management

Seminar Content
2009 was not a very good year for the world economy. The worst of the financial crisis was over , but the effects of the credit binge continued to threaten the real economy, caused a global recession, and, as seen in Greece, continued to put whole economies in danger. Experts expect the current situation to last for at least until end of 2010, if not 2011. The key strategic challenges – decreased demand and sales, significantly reduced and expensive financing as provided by banks and other financiers, and increased risk – will remain the driving forces in defining company strategies for the foreseeable future.
For companies, it is therefore more essential than ever to have a reliable cash and market risk management system in place. Properly measuring and managing cash flow streams, and measuring and managing market risk for currencies, interest rates and commodities, is a precondition for implementing a longterm growth strategy, and for funding the related investments. In the long run, companies are threatened by losses or wrong strategies, but in the short run, companies can go bankrupt because of a lack of liquidity, or because of a sudden devaluation of a currency, faster than they may expect.
In the first part, the theoretical foundations for cash and liquidity measurement and management, and for market risk measurement and management, will be outlined in detail. In the second part, two extensive practical cases will be demonstrated, and, in subsequent group work, the foundations for the design of an integrated cash and market risk management system for the own company will be developed.
